Foundation, Higher, Combined, Triple - explained.
UK GCSE Science comes with a menu of choices - which paper, which tier, which award. It's genuinely confusing even for teachers, and impossible to make sense of if you're a parent, tutor, or student encountering it for the first time. This page walks through every combination in plain English.
1. There are two big choices - and they're separate.
Every GCSE Science student sits one of four combinations. That's because two independent decisions are made about them:
- How many GCSEs? Combined Science (2 GCSEs) or Separate Sciences also called Triple Science (3 GCSEs - Biology, Chemistry, and Physics as their own qualifications).
- Which tier of paper? Foundation (grades 1-5) or Higher (grades 4-9). Same content, different paper.
Combining those gives four real options:

2. Foundation vs Higher - what's actually different?
These are the two papers your child could sit on exam day. Same content taught in class - a different exam paper.
Foundation paper
- Available grades: 1 to 5 (with grade 5 being the top possible score).
- Questions cover the fundamentals of the specification more deeply.
- More scaffolding on the question stems (e.g. multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank options).
- Fewer very-long-answer questions.
- Grade 5 on Foundation = "a strong pass" - equivalent to a low C at old A*-G.
Higher paper
- Available grades: 4 to 9 (grade 9 being the very top).
- Includes topics + skills that only appear on the Higher paper (called Higher-Tier or HT content).
- Longer-answer, extended-response questions carry more marks.
- Fewer scaffolded stems - students construct more of the answer themselves.
- A student who is targeted for grade 4 or above is often entered for Higher, but there's real risk: a student who doesn't reach grade 4 on Higher may miss out on a grade at all (formally, they'd get an "U" - ungraded).
Which tier should a student sit?
Schools + teachers make this call based on how the student's mock exams + coursework are going. Most students are guided to the paper where they can reach their target grade with confidence:
- Aiming for grade 5 or below → Foundation.
- Aiming for grade 4-5 as their floor + can push to 6+ → could go either way; schools often play safe with Foundation for a guaranteed grade 5.
- Consistently working at grade 5+ → Higher.
3. Combined Science vs Separate / Triple Sciences
This is the curriculum choice - how many GCSEs your child ends up with, and how much science they cover.
Combined Science (also called "Trilogy" for AQA)
- 2 GCSEs awarded, given as a "grade-grade" (e.g. 66, 77, 45).
- Covers roughly two-thirds of each of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
- Six exam papers total (2 per science, each ~1h 15).
- 21 Required Practicals covered across the three sciences.
- The most common choice - roughly 80% of UK GCSE Science students sit Combined.
- AQA spec code: 8464.
Separate / Triple Science
- 3 separate GCSEs: one each for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
- Covers the FULL specification of each science - more content depth.
- Six exam papers total (2 per science, each ~1h 45).
- 28 Required Practicals covered across the three sciences (~7 more than Combined).
- Roughly 20% of UK GCSE Science students sit Separate/Triple - usually students in academic-focused schools or students aiming for STEM A-levels.
- AQA spec codes: Biology 8461, Chemistry 8462, Physics 8463.
Which one should a student pick?
Triple has slightly more curriculum time in most schools (5-6 hours a week instead of 4-5), covers more content, and gives 3 separate qualifications on the certificate. It's a good fit for:
- Students planning to take Biology, Chemistry, or Physics at A-level.
- Students aiming for medicine, engineering, pharmacy, veterinary science or other STEM careers.
- Students who genuinely love science and want the extra depth.
Combined is right for students who want a solid science foundation without the extra hours + depth. There is no stigma to sitting Combined - it's the mainstream choice and prepares students well for A-levels too.
4. When these decisions get made - and by whom.

Foundation-Higher genuinely can change during the course based on how a student is doing. Combined-Triple typically cannot - it would need reworking the timetable + potentially catching up on missed content.
5. How SoloCogs handles the four combinations.

Foundation vs Higher
A student on Foundation sees the Foundation content in full and gets a "Peek at preview" card for Higher-only content - a taster, not the full lesson. Higher students see everything at full depth.
Students can toggle between Foundation and Higher themselves - the toggle sits in the accessibility panel of the control deck. Their tutor / parent / school gets a notification when they switch.
Combined vs Separate/Triple
A student on Combined-Foundation sees only their curriculum - Triple content is hidden entirely so it doesn't feel overwhelming.
A student on Combined-Higher sees a small "Triple only" peek card for the extra content, so they can see what the next step up looks like.
A student on Triple sees everything at full depth.
Students cannot change this themselves. Combined vs Triple is set on the account by a tutor, Head of Science, or school admin - or by parents on home-education subscriptions. It's a curriculum decision, not a preference.

6. Glossary of GCSE Science exam terms
The vocabulary that gets thrown around by teachers + exam boards.
- AQA
- One of the main UK exam boards. SoloCogs is built for AQA specifications (Edexcel + OCR to follow).
- Command word
- The verb at the start of an exam question that tells the student what kind of answer is expected: State, Give, Describe, Explain, Compare, Evaluate, Justify, Calculate. Different command words carry different mark allocations.
- Endorsement
- The Required-Practical part of GCSE Science. Students must record their practicals in a lab book; teachers confirm they've done them. It's not graded separately but exam questions can ask about any practical the student was supposed to do.
- Foundation Tier ("FT")
- The exam paper covering grades 1-5. Same content taught in class but the paper focuses on fundamentals with more scaffolding.
- Higher Tier ("HT")
- The exam paper covering grades 4-9. Includes topics + skills that only appear on the Higher paper (marked "HT only" in the AQA spec).
- Mark scheme (MS)
- The document the examiner uses to award marks. Every past paper has a matching mark scheme available on the exam board's website - a critical revision tool.
- Past paper
- A previous year's exam paper. Practising with past papers under exam conditions is one of the most effective revision techniques.
- Required Practical (RP)
- A hands-on practical experiment that all students must have carried out. AQA specifies 21 RPs for Combined Science and 28 for Triple / Separate. Exam questions can reference any of them.
- Specification (spec)
- The official document from the exam board setting out exactly what students must know, in what order, and to what depth. AQA GCSE Science specs: 8464 (Combined), 8461/8462/8463 (Separate).
- Tier of entry
- Which paper (Foundation or Higher) a student is officially entered for. Confirmed by the exams officer in early spring of Year 11.
- Trilogy
- AQA's marketing name for their Combined Science course. If your school says "we do AQA Trilogy" that means Combined AQA (spec code 8464).
- U grade
- "Ungraded". Awarded when a student doesn't reach the minimum threshold for the lowest grade on their paper. On Higher, a U is given if the student doesn't reach grade 4; on Foundation, if they don't reach grade 1.
- Working scientifically (WS)
- The skills strand of the AQA science spec covering scientific method, evaluating evidence, and using data. Assessed via exam questions rather than a separate paper.
