1. The 9-1 grades (and what they mean in "old money")
When GCSEs were reformed in 2017, lettered grades (A*-G) were replaced with numbers 9 down to 1. Number 9 is the new highest grade. Here's the rough conversion:

Combined Science: Trilogy - the "double" award
Most students at AQA take Combined Science: Trilogy - a double GCSE worth two grades. Instead of three single Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) you get one combined qualification graded as two numbers stuck together:
- 9-9, 9-8, 8-8 - top of the cohort.
- 5-5 - both grades a strong pass.
- 4-4 - both grades a standard pass (most common "pass" target).
- 3-3, 2-2 - below pass.
The two numbers are derived from one combined set of papers - they're not separate Biology / Chemistry / Physics grades. Examiners can award uneven pairs (e.g. 5-4) where the student's overall performance falls between two adjacent grade boundaries.
2. Foundation tier vs Higher tier
AQA Combined Science is tiered - your child sits one of two versions of each paper:

Schools decide which tier each student sits - usually after the mock exams. If you want to push for one or the other, talk to the Head of Science. The decision can be revisited up until the exam-entry deadline (usually late February / early March of Year 11).
3. What the Science exams look like
AQA Combined Science: Trilogy has 6 papers in total - two per subject:

What questions look like
- Multiple choice - pick the right answer from 4 options.
- Short answer - one or two-word answers, often filling a gap.
- Calculations - apply a formula. The formula sheet is provided in Physics (and some Chemistry).
- "Describe" / "Explain" - 2-4 sentence written answers.
- Long-response questions ("6-mark questions") - extended writing where the student plans an answer, structures it, and links cause to effect.
- Practical questions - 15% of marks come from Required Practicals (the experiments students do during the course).
4. When are the exams?
GCSE exams happen in May and June of Year 11 (the year your child turns 16). They run across roughly six weeks. The exact timetable is published by JCQ (the Joint Council for Qualifications) in the autumn term of Year 11.
The rough rhythm of Year 11
- September - October: revision starts in earnest at school. Year 11 mocks are scheduled.
- November - December: the big mock exam window. Mocks are scored realistically - they often predict the final grade within a band.
- January - February: mock results discussed with the school. Tier decisions confirmed. Access arrangements applications close.
- Easter holidays: the most important fortnight of revision. Many students do 2-4 hours per day.
- Mid-May to late June: the actual GCSE exams.
- Late August: results day.
5. What to take into the exam
Must-haves (you'll fail entry without these)
- Photo ID - school will tell you what they accept (school passport / library card with photo). Some schools issue an exam ID separately.
- Black pen - blue ink is NOT allowed for the answer paper. Bring 2 or 3 in case one runs out.
- HB pencil - for any drawings or graphs.
- Rubber + sharpener - small ones; some exam rooms ban large pencil cases.
- Ruler - 15-30cm transparent plastic. For drawing graph axes and reading scales.
- Calculator - allowed in ALL Science papers. Must be a scientific or graphical model approved by JCQ (most school calculators are fine). Must NOT have an internet connection.
Nice-to-haves
- Clear water bottle - no labels (peel off any branding). Most exam rooms allow water.
- A watch - the room clock is the official time but a watch helps with pacing. No smart watches - they're banned.
- Tissues in a clear plastic pouch.
- Hand sanitiser in clear bottle (post-COVID, most rooms still allow).
What can't go into the exam room
Most schools have a "leave at the door" box outside the exam room. None of this is a punishment - it's the same rule for every student in the country, and knowing the list in advance makes the morning calm:
- Phones, smart watches, fitness trackers, earphones. Either leave them at home or hand them in at the door. They'll be returned at the end.
- Notes - even on a hand, arm or pencil sleeve. Pen ink on the back of a hand is treated the same way as a printed cheat sheet.
- Branded water bottles. Peel the label off the night before so this isn't a last-minute stress.
- Non-transparent pencil cases. Use a clear plastic one (the £1 shop has them).
6. Exam access arrangements
If your child has a SEND need (diagnosed or not), the school can apply for exam access arrangements - the official adjustments that make exams fair for them. The most common arrangements:

How to get an access arrangement
- Speak to your child's SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) at school as early as possible - ideally Year 9 or Year 10. The earlier, the better.
- Evidence of need - the school needs to show the arrangement is the student's normal way of working. That's why SoloCogs tracks accessibility-feature usage (overlay colour, font choice, read-aloud frequency) - it's automatic, dated evidence the SENCo can use.
- JCQ Form 8 - the SENCo or assessor completes this. Deadline is usually February of Year 11 - so don't leave it.
- Granted arrangements are confirmed in writing and apply to ALL exams across ALL subjects.
7. A realistic revision schedule
A common mistake: cramming for 8 hours the weekend before. It doesn't work. The brain consolidates new knowledge during sleep - so little + often, over weeks, always beats one big binge.
A workable Year 11 revision rhythm
- Term-time (Sept - April): 45-60 minutes per subject, per week, OUTSIDE of homework. Combined Science = 3 subjects, so 2-3 hours total per week.
- Christmas holidays: increase to 1-2 hours per day, but with a clear day OFF every 3 days.
- February half term: the first proper "mock revision" sprint. Aim for 2-3 hours per day.
- Easter holidays: the big one. 3-5 hours per day, split into 25-50 minute blocks with 10-minute breaks.
- Exam fortnight (early May): 1-2 hours per day on the SPECIFIC subjects coming up that week. Less is more - they need to be rested.
A balanced revision day looks like this
- Block 1 (50 min): revise a topic - read notes, watch a video, do a SoloCognition diagnostic.
- Break (10 min): get up, drink water, look out the window. No phone scrolling.
- Block 2 (50 min): apply the topic - past exam questions, a SoloLab practical, a flashcard set.
- Long break (60 min): proper lunch, walk, rest.
- Block 3 (50 min): a different subject. Switch gears.
- Break (10 min).
- Block 4 (50 min): review the week's worst mistakes. Re-do those questions.
That's about 3.5 hours of focused work in a 6-7 hour window. Most students can't sustain more than that without diminishing returns.
8. Revision tips - find what works for any brain
You don't need a diagnosis to find some bits of revision genuinely hard. Lots of adults reading this will recognise the patterns below from their own school days. Match the difficulty to the tip - try one, see if it helps, keep what works.
If starting is the hardest bit
You sit down to revise and 30 minutes later you're on your phone. The work hasn't started. The activation barrier is too high.
- The 5-minute rule. Commit to JUST five minutes. Set a visible timer. Once started, momentum often carries the next 30. Permission to stop at 5 minutes is the trick - it almost never gets used.
- Pick the easiest possible first task. "Write down 3 things you remember about photosynthesis" beats "revise photosynthesis". Tiny wins build the start-state.
- Body doubling. Revise alongside a parent or sibling who's working silently on their own thing. The other person is the anchor - their presence makes the start easier without needing them to teach.
- Same place, same time. The brain learns "this corner at 4pm = revision time". Predictability lowers the energy cost of starting.
If you can start but can't keep going
Five minutes in you've drifted. Fifteen minutes in you've checked the phone. The focus keeps slipping.
- 25-minute sprints with timers. Set a visible countdown. Work until it goes off, then take a real break. Long open-ended blocks usually fail; short defined ones don't.
- Pick the next 3 things ONLY. Write them on a Post-it. Everything else stays out of sight. Long to-do lists overwhelm.
- Movement breaks every 25-50 minutes. Real movement - 10 minutes walking, stretching, jumping. Not scrolling on the sofa. The brain re-sets faster with body movement.
- Variety within a block. Don't read for 45 minutes. Read for 10, then do a question, then quiz yourself out loud, then draw a diagram. Switching mode keeps attention engaged.
If reading is slow, hard or tiring
Words flip. Lines blur into each other. Re-reading the same paragraph three times still doesn't stick.
- Read aloud everything. Hearing the text alongside reading it can double retention. SoloCogs has a read-aloud button on every lesson page - press play and let the platform do the work.
- Try a coloured overlay. SoloCogs has seven background colours (cream, mint, rose, sky, orange, lavender, aqua). For some readers, one specific colour makes the text suddenly "hold still". No diagnosis needed - just try each for 30 seconds and see.
- Turn on the dyslexic font. Designed so letters don't flip (b/d/p/q look different). Open the accessibility panel, tap "Dyslexic font". You'll know in 30 seconds if it helps.
- Bigger text, more space. Tap A+ in the accessibility panel until the page feels comfortable. Cramped text is harder for everyone - not just dyslexic readers.
- Mind maps + colour-coding - words alone are slower to parse. Hierarchical visual layouts can unlock memory.
If busy environments are overwhelming
Open-plan classrooms drain you. Noisy houses break concentration. Bright screens hurt your eyes.
- Sensory comfort first. Noise-cancelling headphones, fidget items, the chair that's "right", a snack that doesn't crunch. Optimise the environment, not the willpower.
- Quiet revision spot. A consistent quiet corner is better than the kitchen table during dinner-prep. If home is loud, a library or school study room is gold.

If exams make you anxious
You know the material in revision but freeze in the exam. The thought of the paper alone makes you sick.
- Lower the stakes during practice. "This is a try, not a test" framing matters. SoloCognition has no timer and no pass/fail for exactly this reason.
- Build a "success folder". Print every good result, every "I got it" moment, every kind comment a teacher made. On bad days, the folder is evidence the anxious brain dismisses.
- Practise the exam environment. Sit at a desk, time yourself, do one paper. The first time you sit a timed paper should NOT be in the actual exam room.
- Name the worst-case scenario. "What if I fail Biology paper 1?" Answer it out loud. Resits exist. Pathways exist. The catastrophic story usually loses its grip when said aloud.
- Breathing exercises before the paper. 4 seconds in, hold 7, 8 out. Three rounds. Drops the heart rate measurably. Practise it during revision so it's familiar on the day.
If routine + predictability help
The same timetable, the same desk, knowing exactly what comes next - this is when you feel calm enough to learn.
- Visual schedules. Print the week's revision blocks on paper. Tick each off as you go. The visible completion matters.
- Same time, same place, same warm-up. Three songs, then a snack, then start. The ritual is the brain's "we do this now" signal.
- Tie new content to existing interests. If you love Pokémon, find Pokémon biology examples. If you love football, do physics through projectile motion of a football. The interest is the route in.
- Plan transitions explicitly. Between subjects, between revision and dinner. Surprise transitions are exhausting; planned ones aren't.
If routine bores you and variety helps
Doing the same topic for an hour feels like punishment. You switch off the moment things feel "samey".
- Rotate subjects every 25 minutes. Biology → break → Chemistry → break → Physics. The brain gets a "new puzzle" feel each time.
- Different formats for the same content. Read it, then do a quiz, then explain it to a teddy bear, then draw it. Same idea, four routes in.
- Pick the WORK from the next 3 things you'd actually enjoy rather than letting someone else dictate the order.
- Reward yourself per block. A doodle, a snack, a 5-minute video. The brain learns "after this 25 minutes there's a thing I look forward to".
If you crash hard at the end of a session
You can do 90 minutes of intense work then you're useless for two hours. Pacing is everything.
- Plan for the crash. Don't put two long revision sessions back-to-back. Build in a real break - eat, walk, lie down.
- Recharge activities. Identify what genuinely refills you (a walk, music, drawing, video games) vs what drains you while feeling restful (scrolling). Pick the recharger.
- Less is more in the evening. By 8pm the brain is done. Light reading is fine; new learning isn't sticking. Sleep is when consolidation happens - protect it.
9. How to help WITHOUT being annoying about it
Honest version: by GCSE age, your input lands very differently than it did in primary school. What actually helps:
Do
- Ask "what's the easy thing you could do in 10 minutes?" rather than "have you done your revision?". Lowers the activation barrier.
- Quiz them out loud - in the car, at dinner, during walks. Five questions, no pressure. Recall is the strongest study technique and it's free.
- Praise effort, not outcome. "You sat down for 40 minutes - that's the win." vs "You scored 4 out of 10 - that's a fail." The first one builds the habit.
- Defend their sleep. No revision past 10pm. Sleep is when knowledge consolidates.
- Cook + clean + drive - take logistics off their plate during exam weeks. The brain has finite executive function.
- Suggest leaving the phone in another room during a revision block - not confiscation, just "you can check it at the next break". A brain that knows it has access focuses better than one that's been punished. Confiscation usually backfires: the focus goes onto missing the phone, not onto the revision.
Don't
- Compare to siblings or friends. Even joking. It poisons the well.
- Doom-monger. "If you don't get a 4 you'll be stuck on a checkout..." - this paralyses, doesn't motivate.
- Re-teach the subject yourself. Unless you're a Science teacher, your version of GCSE Science is from 1995 and the spec has changed. Trust the teacher / tutor / platform.
- Bring up exams during downtime. They need hours per day where exams don't exist.
- Confiscate the phone as a punishment. It feels like a power play, breeds resentment, and rarely produces better focus. The "phone in the kitchen during a block" approach gives them ownership of the decision.
